Gmail IMAP stops working (0x800CCCD1) – Clearing the CAPTCHA

Have you been using an IMAP connection (Thunderbird, Windows Live, Windows Mobile) to your Gmail account that just stops working out of the blue? 
 
I’m not sure what triggers this need (perhaps too many wrong password attempts, or to many connections over a specific time period), but running a Google process of clearing the CAPTCHA worked for my issue.
